Norm Nathan
Trying to leave the world a little Sillier than I found it.
That was Norm's motto, and his show certainly that come true. Known as a jazz lover with a corn-ball sense of humor on Boston Radio from the 40s to the 90s, Norm's largest stage came in the mid 80's when he joined Boston's WBZ, a station that reaches over 68 states, 81 provinces, and 4 planets with it's 50,000 watt signal. He did the all-night talkshow on BZ weekends, but his show never had a real topic, and never touched on the "topics" that were the thrust of other shows. He always tried to "keep it light," with no politics or real social issues. Every call was taken with a smile on his face, and some of the best times were when he'd come on to octogenerian women or when a gullibile listener would be escorted down the road of Norm's imagination. He once convinced a listener, complaining about what kids are taught in school these days, that kids were being taught that a man named Sydney Goldfarb discovered America after rowing here from Europe in a kayak made out of paper mache. He was also gracious. As someone who grew up in awe of him and his show, I once called the station, and asked if I could stop by. Not only did he say yes, but he put me on the air (on BZ?!?!!?) for a half hour. As a 16 year old kid, I was in heaven. Dozens of Norm airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Norm Nathan tapes.
Frank Benny
Frank was the Midday jock on WGR-AM and the weatherman on WGR-TV throughout the late 60s and 70s. His big voice and delivery always sounded to the point and official for most of the House Fraus listening, but if you were hip to the double entendres and sometimes blu commentary, he was always good for a laugh. Frank also worked at WBEN for a time, and is now in Florida entertaining America. Frank Benny airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Frank Benny tapes.
Bill Masters
Mr. Warmth, Bill Masters, was another big smooth voice with a completely irregular sense of humor. After filling the Midday slot at WBEN in the 70s, Bill moved around the Buffalo and Rochester dials until his death in the early 90s. Dozens of Bill Masters airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Norm Bill Masters tapes, including many from his personal collection.
Pat O'Day
After news and jock stops in Bradford, Olean, and Niagara Falls, East Side Native Pat O'Day joined WBEN Radio in 1994 and never looked back. After several years in media sales and underwriting, Pat is now a webmaster for a Polish Language website. Dozens of Pat O'Day (aka Martin Biniasz) airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Pat O'Day tapes.
Al Wallack
Coming up next on WNED... Reading Rainbow. Followed by Upstairs, Downstairs.
For over 30 years, Al has been one of the key cogs at Buffalo's AM 970. He was the long-time host of the classic Jazz in the Nighttime progam on WEBR, then became Operations Manager for WNED-AM when the format and call letters changed. Though not naturally blessed with the classic baritone so coveted by announcers, Al uses his voice in much the same way a good jazz man uses his instrument: The notes are always in the right place at the right time, but they also convey feeling. As one of Western New York's best voiceover men, Al is the voice of WNED-TV, Buffalo's PBS outlet.
Dell Manning
After a storied platter-spinning career in Erie, PA, not much is known about Dell after conclusion of his days there, except for an appearence in a television spot for a Personal Injury Attorney.
Stan Roberts
Ba-Dum-Bum! That vocalized rimshot crashes quite easily (and often!) from the lips of Buffalo’s beloved self-fashioned Corny DJ… For parts of seven decades, Stan Roberts has been on the radio making us laugh… and groan. From the time of his arrival at WKBW Radio in the early 60s, through his days at WGR, WBUF and WBEN, Stan has made a career of not taking himself too seriously. And so long as you were laughing, or at least smiling (no matter with him or at him) he figures his job well done. For all of the lampshades Stan has worn on his head in TV commercials, he’s also been a part of many of Buffalo’s most exciting times. Thousands of Sabres fans still cherish the Memorable Sabres Highlights record Stan voiced in commemoration of the 1975 Stanley Cup year. Thousands of Bills fans ignored his warnings to “Stay off the Field” as they tore down Rich Stadium goalposts at the beginning of the Bills Superbowl run. Stan also helped organize Light Up Buffalo… inspiring some of the most stunning night time photos ever taken of Downtown Buffalo. He’s also made his mark in radio sales, as one of Buffalo Radio’s top billing salesmen of the past quarter century. But most importantly, from his time as a teen DJ in Asbury Park, NJ in the late 40s; to his role as one of Buffalo’s senior radio salesmen, Stan Roberts has always had the gift to make us smile whether we want to or not. Dozens of Stan Roberts airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Stan Roberts tapes.
Fred Klestine
Fred was the laid back voice of reason on that loud kids staiton, WKBW. Fred's radio career started when the manager at WBNY met him and said he had a great voice, and asked him to come down for an audtion. That was the beginning of a 35 year career. Fred spent the latter portion of his career at WBUF-FM. Many Fred Klestine airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Fred Klestine tapes.
Joey Reynolds
With a mouth than runs about 96 miles an hour, and a brian that runs a few mph faster, Joey has made a career out of being slightly nuts and completely entertaining. His all night Talkshow syndicated out of WOR in New York (and run all night on the station that helped make hiom famous, Buffalo's KB) is one of the most eclectic and fascinating progams on the radio today. Dozens of Joey Reynolds airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Joey Reynolds tapes.
Don Berns
Another big voice and fast wit, Berns is another in a long line of great talents to have come through KB Radio. He now serves as the station voice and liner guy for the all-new all-old KB Radio. Dozens of Don Berns tapes airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Don Berns tapes. This has been a Dr. and Mrs. Berns Production.
Sandy Beach
Sandy has taken the full ride in the life of a broadcaster with his Buffalo listerners. He came to Buffalo as a hot-shot rock'n'roll jock in the late 60s, matured here, programmed the great KB, hosted a morning zoo style format on Majic 102, and now hosts the definative talk show in Western New York on Buffalo's heritage radio station. As we've changed and adapted with our surroundings, Sandy has, too. Few personalites can make a market there home for nearly 40 years, but even fewer do it by reinventing their career as it feels right to them. Dozens of Sandy Beach airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Sandy Beach tapes.
George "Hound Dog" Lorenz
Every disc jockey on this page was influenced, eitehr directly or indirectly, by the Hound. Its strange that the advent of the music he helped to popularize (know known as Rock'N'Roll), is what pushed his out of the lime light. Through the early 50s, the Hound was the only one playing the Race and Rhythm music that became the ground work for the popular music of the late 50s and 60s. The WKBW signal that made so many from Buffalo famous throughout the north east, first helped George Lorenz gaim a cult following for Rock'n Roll, even before there was such a thing. He was pushed out at KB when they became Buffalo's first rock'nroll station, and later started Buffalo's WBLK-FM. Several Hound Dog airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Hound Sound tapes.
Danny Neaverth
What Clint Beuhlman was to a previous generation Dan Neaverth is to the Baby Boom generation. Danny's smart-alecky sweetness has been a fixture on Buffalo Radio since the late 50s, staring on WBNY, then moving to KB permenatly by 1961. Danny hosted mornings there for 15 years until they folded up the tent in 1987. Dan was then WHTT-FM's morning mayor for nearly 15 years, when they folded the tent on Danny. He's now back home on KB Radio, and back in his element... Short segements with great punchlines just as the record starts. His crosstalk with Sandy Beach around 10am is some of Buffalo's best radio daily. Dozens of Danny airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Clean Dan Neaverth tapes.
Rick Jay
Ricky Jay was the glue that held together the great WNUC, the Bullet. Raised by poodles, Ricky managed to climb to the top of the radio business only to succumb to the damnation of the unrequited love of crossover star impersonator Shania Twin. Ricky Jay airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Ricky Jay and WNUC tapes. Also check the WNSA Page.
Jack Armstrong
Your LEEEEEEEEADER!
One of the greatest jocks ever, Jack is appreciated and remembered by so many becasue he had so many jobs! Be was able to be the Drake format restrictions by jamming a 5 minute break into 10 seconds. Over 30 years after his first KB go around in in early 70s, Jack is back on KB (when not interrupted by Bisons baseball!?!?) with the same amount of energy, preparedness and fun (and of course fast talking) that he was known for at his Dozens of stops around the nation's dials. Jackson airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Jackson Armstrong tapes.
Neil "Neal" McManus
Neil is probably best known as the pony-tailed Pigskin Prognosticator on Empire Television's Fan-TV starring Jay Howard and Pat Robbins. Neil McManus airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Neil tapes. Also check the WNSA Page.
Bill Knight
As Bill Lacy, Bill Knight has been a familiar morning voice to Buffalo for 20 years. Dozens of Bill Knight (aka Bill Lacy) airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Bill Lacy tapes.
Brandy Scrufari
Since his days at WHLD under the guidance of the great Eddy Jo, its been mostly down hill for Brandy. An unnatural love of marimbas, naval klaxons, and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass has left his radio stalled as clean up man for Terri Berman weeknds on Rock-Majic-Q-Star 102.5. His slightly off sense of humor (that goes over the heads of too many who hear him) beckons back to the days of Bill Masters and Frank Benny. There are several Brandy Scrufari airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Brandy tapes.
Shane Brother Shane
I had no idea Shane was a dj until after I voted for him for Buffalo City Council. Just kidding. Shane is well, a truly original cosmic cowboy. Several Shane airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Shane Brother Shane tapes.
Tommy Shannon
A Legend in Buffalo, Detroit, and the backseat of his Corvette, Tommy Shannon is a tru icon.... And that's just because of his 1958 varsity recording "Frosty." Tommy is one of the best ever, and he still blushes when you tell him you're a fan. Dozens of Tom Shannon airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Tommy Shannon tapes.
Jeff Kaye
Thoughts on Jeff appear in the Big Voices section. Dozens of Jeff Kaye airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Jefferson Kaye tapes.
Roger Christian
From overnight man on album rock 97GRQ, to middays with the mom-set on Star 102.5, He takes a lickin and keeps on tickin'... He's been with 102.5 since their switch to a rock format in 1976... That means he's been at 5 stations with out ever leaving 102.5. (For the record Stereo FM 102, Rock 102, Majic 105, Q-102, and now Star 102.5) Dozens of Roger Christian airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Jackson Armstrong tapes.
Rod Roddy
Come On Down!
Yes, the late Price IS Right announcer did middays on KB and was a FANTASTIC jock...(Although some say he was better at reading the tag line for Durkee Fried onions and Metholatum Deep Heating Rub on TV) Rod Roddy airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Roddy tapes.
Dave Maynard
I libed in Massachusetts for a short time growing up, and the Dave Maynard Show had a great impact on the way I listen to radio. My first time on the radio was with Dave Maynard at the age of seven... And I haven't looked back.I still have my Maynard in the Morning t-shirt.
Larry Glick
Known better as the all night show Host on BZ, I remember Larry as the afternoon guy, and that he was, well nuts. I remember riding around in my parents 1983 Dodge Aries station wagon (with faux wood panelling), and just laughing my little 8 year old ass off at this guy. The first radio bit I remeber being obessed with was one his used to play called "The Presidents Playing Poker." Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan. That was the funniest thing I had ever heard to that point... Wish I had a copy today. Check out Rare Vinyl or e-mail me for more Larry Glick audio.
Bobby Wright
He took me to my first radio station, WMRC, in Milford, Massachusetts in 1984. I've been infected ever since. Bobby Wright (aka Bob Mitchell aka Brother Bob aka Bob Kincaid) airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Brother Bob tapes.
JJ Kincaid
JJ and I started in radio together... In a studio in his basement in second grade. His style now is a kind of throwback... His quick wit is disgusting but intellengent... Reminiscent of a young Joey Reynolds. JJ Kincaid (aka Jack Tripper) airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more JJ Kincaid tapes.
Big Ed "Jay" Moranski
A Big voice, a sense of humor, and the ability to put together more than two English sentences together. Jay Moran airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Jay tapes.
Jack Mindy
Jack Mindy airchecks are available in ourSearchable Aircheck Archive, or e-mail me for more Jack Mindy tapes.
